Hiring a Web Designer in Manchester? 7 Things to Check First

blank

Finding the right web designer in Manchester isn't as straightforward as it used to be. As a designer based in Poynton, Cheshire, working with SMEs across Greater Manchester and the North West, I see the results of both good and bad hiring decisions regularly. A quick Google search returns hundreds of options — from large digital agencies to freelancers working out of a spare bedroom, and everything in between. Prices range from a few hundred pounds to tens of thousands. Quality varies just as wildly.

So how do you cut through the noise and find someone who'll actually deliver? Here are seven things to check before you hand over a penny.

1. A Portfolio That Proves They Can Do the Job

This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many businesses skip past it. Before anything else, look at the work. Does it look like the kind of website you want? Is it varied, showing the designer can adapt to different industries and audiences? Does it include examples from businesses similar in size or sector to yours?

A strong portfolio tells you a lot. A weak one — or worse, no portfolio at all — should set alarm bells ringing straight away. View my portfolio here

2. They Ask Questions Before Quoting

A good web designer will want to understand your business before they put a price on the work. If someone sends you a quote within minutes of your first contact — without asking about your goals, your customers, or what you actually need the site to do — that's a red flag.

The discovery process matters. A website built without a proper brief will almost always miss the mark, no matter how good it looks.

3. They Talk About Results, Not Just Design

Design is a means to an end. Your website should be doing a job: generating enquiries, building trust, converting visitors into customers. A good web designer understands this and talks about it naturally.

Be wary of anyone who focuses purely on aesthetics. A beautiful website that doesn't perform is a very expensive business card.

4. They're Clear on What's Included

Web design quotes can be deceptively vague. Before you commit, make sure you know exactly what you're getting.

Copywriting. Is website copy included, or are you expected to supply it yourself? Writing good web copy is a skill in its own right, and if it's not included you'll need to budget for it separately.

SEO. Will the site be built with search engines in mind? Will you be visible to people searching for your services in Manchester and the surrounding area? A site that nobody can find is a site that isn't working. [Find out how I approach web design and local SEO for Cheshire and Manchester businesses →]

Mobile optimisation. Over half of web traffic now comes from mobile devices. Your site needs to work beautifully on a phone, not just a desktop.

Ongoing support. What happens after the site goes live? Is there a support package, or are you on your own the moment it launches?

Getting clarity on these points upfront saves a lot of frustration later.

5. You'll be working with the person you're talking to

This one is particularly important if you're considering a larger agency. It's common practice for agencies to send their most senior people to win the business, then hand the actual work off to a more junior team once the contract is signed.

Ask directly: who will be doing the work? Will you have a consistent point of contact throughout the project?

For most SMEs, working directly with the designer rather than through an account manager makes a real difference to both the process and the end result. At Cahill Creative, every project is handled personally by me — you get 20 years of senior creative experience from the first conversation to the final delivery.

6. They Understand Your Local Market

If you're a Manchester or Cheshire business looking to attract local customers, it helps enormously to work with a designer who understands that market. Someone who knows the difference between what works in Altrincham and what works in the Northern Quarter. Someone who can write and design for your actual audience rather than a generic one.

Local knowledge isn't everything, but it counts for more than most people give it credit for.

Based in Manchester, Stockport, or Cheshire? If you're looking for a web designer who knows your market and will work with you directly, let's have a conversation. Book a free 30-minute discovery call with Dan here — no obligation, just honest advice about what your website needs.

7. They're Honest About What They Don't Do

No designer does everything brilliantly. The best ones are upfront about where their strengths lie. If you ask about something outside their expertise, a good designer will tell you rather than wing it and hope for the best.

Honesty about limitations is a sign of professionalism, not weakness. It's also a good indicator of how the working relationship will go once the project is underway.

So where does that leave you?

If you're a business owner in Manchester, Stockport, Cheshire, or the wider North West and you're looking for a web designer who ticks all seven of these boxes, I'd like to think Cahill Creative is worth a look.
